Moccasin Bend
In September, we did another dig with SEAC, this time at Moccasin Bend National Historic Site in Chattanooga, TN. It was hot, overgrown and steep. That has never stopped us though. Here, we started out below a power line.
Wayne digs a signal.
Somewhere along here, Wayne dug this pistol ball.
Jim Ogden, National Park Service employee at Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Battlefields, stands next to a really old tree . That sucker must have been a sapling when the war ended.
Joe and Kevin working along the side of the hill. This gives an idea of how steep it was.
SEAC employees, Steve, Chuck and Jessica. Better view of how steep parts of this was.
Walt digs on the crest of the hill.
and found this brass ring that is gold plated.
Wayne dug the top portion of a Williams Cleaner,
and Kevin found a fired 3-ringer.
OK, if I mess this up, let me know!

This was our crew for the day.
The area in red was where we were working. The place on the right is the police firing range. It is amazing the odd angles that bullets bouncing off of metal plates will travel. Also, they must go straight up as well, as well found pounds of them on the left side of the ridge below the power line clearing. Made us nervous as they were shooting the day we worked this.
After we got out, a few little specks were found on some of us.
With the dime for size comparison, you can see how small these ticks were that latched onto us. I think I had about 50 of them, from my toes (they crawled down into my boots!) to the back of my neck. Itched for a week after this trip!

It was fun and the Park Service now knows that the ridge did not have a key role in the Battle for Chattanooga.
