Kennesaw 4-2007
The Park was planning to modify where an existing trail went and asked us to work a twelve foot wide swath along where the new trail would run. They only wanted two people, so Kevin and his son Mark went.
Here is the first target that Mark dug, a nice dropped Enfield bullet.
Just a few feet away from the bullet, he found this rear sight for an Enfield.
The sight.
Right after that, he found the long range, flip-up portion of the sight. Kevin then found a trigger and three pieces of barrel bands. Mark then found a chunk of a cannon ball, which may explain why these parts were laying here.
Here is the group as we crossed the existing trail. W. R., Steve, John, Kevin and Mark.
Mark found a spot with a large portion of an exploded Hotchkiss shell. This shell had the case shot balls in it.
After lunch we went to a second area, where Kevin located four friction primers.
They both found a few dropped three ringers.
In addition, shell fragments and other artifacts were found in this area. The information will help the Park know what activities took place at each location.
Unfortunately, we did locate a few areas where folks had been digging inside the Park. Those activities reflect on all of us that metal detect and need to be stopped. If you know of anyone that has been digging inside the National Parks, reporting this information will help to protect all of us that enjoy this hobby legally.
